N25m Donation: Amputee hawker in trouble over false claims

Mary Daniels, the amputee ‘pure water’ hawker at Oshodi, Lagos, whose story went viral on social media, eliciting pity and donations from Nigerians to the tune of over N25m may have run into troubled waters.

Dependable sources told VERIFIED NEWS that the matter had been reported by the Lagos State Government to the police and that the amputee, Mary Daniels, may be prosecuted if the current investigations on her activities are found to be false. In view of this, Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has directed the relevant Ministry to hand over the matter to the Police for further investigations. The source said: “Governor Sanwo-Olu gave the directive on Wednesday after it was discovered that Daniels’ story was staged and untrue after all. The cat was let out of the bag when it was discovered that the story must have been fabricated following strange calls that Daniels had continued to receive from a team who was instrumental to the idea. The governor directed that a Kogi traditional leader in Lagos and a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), Irede foundation, should further investigate the story and keep a tap on her movements. Meanwhile, the Office of Special Adviser on Civic Engagement to Lagos State Governor has been directed to handle the case.”

It was discovered that the stories earlier narrated by the amputee were conflicting. The development came to light when some of the people Daniels had a deal with started calling repeatedly, demanding for their own share of the donations Daniels had received from the public or else they would expose her. It was also discovered that her claims that she was an orphan and that the parents died during an accident were untrue.
