Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, one of the groups agitating for the secession of the old Eastern Region of Nigeria has been arrested. According to the Attorney General of Nigeria, Abubakar Malami, Kanu, whose group, has been proscribed, was arrested following a collaboration between Nigerian authorities and the INTERPOL.
The Attorney General said Kanu was extradited to Nigeria on Sunday, June 27 and would resume trial soon. Kanu, the leader of IPOB, who lives in UK, had jumped bail while being tried for treason in 2018.
Lately several violent attacks in the South East and South South regions of the country have been ascribed to the group, which FG classified as a terrorist group, a decision that has been roundly criticized by many Nigerians, considering that the more violent Boko Haram, ravaging the entire northern Nigeria and beyond, has not been so classified by the Federal Government under General Mohammadu Buhari.
